Water walking

Over the last few weeks our LifeGroup (the church that meets in our home) have been working through John Ortberg’s book ‘If you want to walk on water, you have to get out of the boat’.

John Ortberg is one of my favourite authors for the simple effectiveness of his writing and teaching and this book is no exception. Just as a taster, here is a quotation from the opening session:

There is something – Someone – inside us who tells us there is more to life than sitting in the boat. You were made for something inside you that wants to walk on the water – to leave the comfort of routine existence and abandon yourself to the high adventure of following God.

To close he asks several great questions – but this one particularly caught my attention:

Are you excited about your relationship with God right now? Is is dynamic and growing or pretty stale?

Good question! Sometimes it is just too comfortable and acceptable to stay seated in our boats rather than step out onto the water where Jesus is …

  1. Great post, Hugh. And it is really interesting: Sometimes, it seems to me that Lord Jesus has to allow a bit of a storm in our sea – all in order to get our attention and remind us that we really are hanging out in the boat.

    I don’t know. Just a thought.

    =-)
