Helping the Palestinians

I was interested to see Monday’s report from the BBC that the European Union were providing £83M emergency aid to the Palestinian Authority to prevent their interim government from collapsing. The money is to be distributed via the United Nations to ensure that basic services can be maintained to the Palestinian people.

The imminent prospect of a new government led by Hamas makes things very complicated for world politics. Although it was democratically elected, Hamas is classified as a terrorist organisation by Israel, the US and the European Union. Israel are therefore refusing to transfer the funds necessary to cover essential services such as water, energy and medicines. The money they are holding back has been raised directly from the Palestinian people on whose behalf they are supposed to be collecting the taxation.

While I am certainly no supporter of the violence and bloodshed perpetrated by Hamas (or by Israel, just so I am clear!), there are other injustices at play which are also abhorrent to God. Personally, I am grateful that the European Union have stepped in to provide at least interim humanitarian relief until a more permanent solution can be found.

Deut 24:14-15
Do not take advantage of a hired man who is poor and needy, whether he is a brother Israelite or an alien living in one of your towns.
Pay him his wages each day before sunset, because he is poor and is counting on it. Otherwise he may cry to the LORD against you, and you will be guilty of sin. (NIV)

  1. This is a tuff issue, with huge ramifications. What should Israel do? Hamas which is a terrorist organization is committed to Israel’s destruction. They could by releasing the taxes and duties fund terror against themselves.
