Ten Million Deaths

Yesterday an article in the New Scientist published some sobering statistics from a report on mortality conducted among more than 14 million people in India. It estimates that in the last 20 years around 10 million female foetuses have been selectively aborted following ultrasound results.

The article includes a very revealing quote:

“Female infanticide of the past is refined and honed to a fine skill in this modern guise,” says Shiresh Sheth of the Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai, India, in a commentary accompanying the study in The Lancet.

This startling figure certainly puts a focus on the tragic issue of abortion worldwide. Scripture paints such a contrasting picture to the prevailing worldview that allows this to continue:

You watched me as I was being formed in utter seclusion, as I was woven together in the dark of the womb. You saw me before I was born. Every day of my life was recorded in your book. Every moment was laid out before a single day had passed. (Psalm 13915-16, NLT)
